What do you do for fun?

Tuesday, Jeri Rowe, a columnist with the Greensboro News and Record, came out to interview us. The article will appear tomorrow, Sunday, but that’s not what this post is about. After much chat about how we prepared, what concerns we have, what the rally rules are, he finally asked, “OK, with all this seriousness, what do you do for fun?” My first thought was, nothing. This rally will take all our time and attention. Then I realized, yes, we do have some things that we will do, just for fun. No other purpose. So here is my first, Just-For-Fun story.

Many of you may know that it is common for Beetles to have a bud vase on the dashboard. Even the New Beetles have a plastic one. But the Type 1 VWs had a ceramic one on the dash. I wanted one. So Ed called Mid American Motorworks- it was not listed in their catalog but yup, they had them. So, for my birthday last June, he gave me one, installed the holder and voila. I have an New-old bud vase. My goal is to pick fresh flowers all along our route, all across the US, Asia, and Europe and mark our trip with flower-power! Just for fun. I’ll photograph them too and document our progress-for fun.

It seems only fitting since it is April in N.Carolina that we start with dogwood in the vase. So you see, we have started the fun!

The odometer reads 78077. Our starting milaege on the road to Paris.

About ejhowle23

Authors and adventurers, participated in the World Race 2011, an automobile rally from New York to Paris, crossing three continents and 14,000 land miles. Following much the same route as the setting for our debut novel, The Long Road to Paris. This blog describes our own adventures and challenges. And now you can follow our Bahamas sailing adventure that provides the setting for our second novel, Night Watch. Our rally, the African Safari Challenge, crossed five countries in South Africa in May 2014 and in 2015 we participated in the second Trans-American rally this time from Nova Scotia to San Francisco. Spring of 2016 we travelled 28 days around Australia with friends from previous rallies and in the fall participated in our most exhausting rally through Argentina, Chili and Peru- the Rally of the Incas. We were awarded the Against All Odds award. We're still not sure if this was for us or our car. Stewball never broke down and we hardly did. We will soon take on Iceland as a self-drive tour and in the fall of 2017 we will participate in the Odyssey Italia and then back to Africa for a do-over (almost) of the Africa Safari Challenge.

Wouldn’t it be great if you had a way to press them? What a momento that would be of the trip…a shadowbox/picture frame of all the pressed flowers!

That should work. Yes, lots of weight there.
