Riding in comfort

Next stop Daytona Beach, FL. This time in the comfort of our Yukon XL.  The multipurpose trip will include a stop in Charleston, SC to pick up the boxes of rally stuff that Dennis, Tom and Howard were kind enough to let us off-load into their trailer for the ride home.

As if they didn’t have enough vehicle trouble on the rally with the Studebaker, the trip back was also fraught with problems. Not only did they have three boxes of our stuff, including the extra books we didn’t sell on the road, the trailer contained the Studebaker and Jack’s engine. Here’s where one problem began. The Studebaker was loaded before Jack’s engine. This made the weight distribution wrong and tended to cause the trailer to fishtail. This made driving slow and tense. Dennis also told Ed that he blew out 6 tires on the trip. Due to extra weight? Distribution of weight? Apparently damaged some rims along with tires. Can you imagine all the stops on the side of the road changing tires and finding new ones? Not easy or cheap. Both Tom and Dennis are going to China, but they will ride in the support vehicle and no responsiblity and worry about cars and trailers. We are really glad to have them along. Just wish Howard was going too.

Dennis’s kindness didn’t stop with hauling things home for us. He even offered to meet us along I95, so we wouldn’t have to make the detour (50+ miles) into Charleston.  As if he hasn’t done enough! but you know, this is what car guys do for each other. I hope we are as generous.

 We will go to Charleston, meet our friend Ann Igoe for lunch and our son Mike and his wife Daphne for dinner-then on the Daytona on Tuesday morning.

We don’t have results and standings for the US leg of this rally and there is a debate about whether the competition part of the event will continue in Asia and Europe. There is no competition in the alternative fuel division. Jerry’s multi-fuel corvette is the only one shipping to China and everyone is having concerns about the cars making it to Paris if we continue to rally.  Jack’s engine is still a question,  Clay’s 32 Ford, we have been told, not only had rear-axle problems but also wheel-bearing problems, and Jerry’s 2004 Corvette had to have an oil seal replaced and was delayed in loading. Even Stewball had a front wheel-bearing go bad. No official word yet. We hope we hear soon as it make a difference in our preparation-should we be reading about places we will visit and this part of the 1908 race in order to answer questions? and what resources (books and articles) should we pack? I don’t think our secret source will want a call in the middle of the night and who knows about internet connections in Kazakhstan.

Authors and adventurers, participated in the World Race 2011, an automobile rally from New York to Paris, crossing three continents and 14,000 land miles. We were awarded the Against All Odds award. We're still not sure if this was for us or our car. Stewball never broke down and we hardly did. We will soon take on Iceland as a self-drive tour and in the fall of 2017 we will participate in the Odyssey Italia and then back to Africa for a do-over (almost) of the Africa Safari Challenge.

    Anyone who has ever been involved with cars knows how generous most people are. When we ran car events at large race tracks, people would break down, and others would offer to load the sick car onto a trailer and give the person a ride home.

    It’s amazing.

    I am really surprised to hear there aren’t any scores yet. That seems really unusual in my experience. In fact, this is the first time I’ve heard of such a think. Interesting. How are you all supposed to know where you need to improve?

    That’s too bad there aren’t other entries in the alternative-fuel division. It would be nice if there were enough so make a competition and be able to have a chance at an award, but with only one entry, that would hardly be fair or ethical, for that matter. That’s too bad, as alternative fuels are the way of the future.

    Have a great trip down south, and how lucky you are to have such a great group of friends made on the first leg!
